AH35  South Coast & Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon 1 Apr 2015 -
31 Oct 2015

Highlights:
  • Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon
  • Boat tour on the lagoon
  • Seljalandsfoss waterfall
  • Skógafoss waterfall

Tour Description:

This tour takes us along the beautiful south shore of Iceland to the extraordinary glacier lagoon, Jökulsárlón.

We will pass some charming villages as well as Skaftafell National Park and visit Seljalandsfoss waterfall and Skógafoss waterfall. Just before we reach the lagoon we pass Iceland’s biggest volcano, Öræfajökull glacier which has the highest peak of the island, Hvannadalshnjúkur (2110 m).

Panoramas IcelandAfter we arrive at the lagoon we take a boat tour on the lagoon. Please note that the boat tours will not be available on April departures due to the amount of ice on the lagoon. These are expected to start in early May.
The boats that carry us are no ordinary boats as they are capable of driving short distances on land as well as sailing on the water.

Jökulsárlón started to form in the early nineteen twenties and is getting bigger every year. You will see many amazing blocks of ice that have broken off Europe’s biggest glacier, Vatnajökull, as they sail slowly towards the ocean which is only a kilometer away.

After a refreshing boat tour on the glacial lagoon, we head back to Reykjavík.
Please note: We reserve the right to alter the itinerary if weather conditions change or if the boat tour on the glacier lagoon is cancelled.

We just did this tour on May 25. I was concerned about the length of the tour, but really wanted to see these sights. I was beyond impressed at the breathtaking scenery. The waterfalls are absolutely beautiful. The black sand lava beds are interesting to see and drive through. And, the glacial lagoon is beyond words. You just have to see it. Wow! Some of the waterfall stops where quick, so make the most of your time. The stops for lunch and supper were quite good, although if you're at the back of the line, you'll feel pressed for time. The 14 hours flew by! Special thanks to our tour guide, Brandon, and our bus driver, Kristofer, who provided us a lot of information, entertainment, and laughs! They were the BEST!

Absolutely fantastic tour. Yes, it is a long day, but it is well worth it. You get to see the many different landscapes of Iceland, along with its changeable weather. The waterfall stops along the way are well worth seeing; being able to get so close to the bottom of the powerful Skógafoss waterfall was amazing. Indeed, the opportunity to walk behind the Seljalandsfoss waterfall is something not to be missed! The Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon was a truly amazing site, and we were even lucky enough to see some seals coming in from the Atlantic. The boat ride itself was enjoyable, with the boat tour guide providing information and collecting ice to see and taste! The rest stops were well timed, and the tour guide was informative and made the tour extremely enjoyable. I would have liked more time at some sites, but the strict schedule is understandable given the length of the day. If you are only to do one trip, I would fully recommend this as the one to do. Worth every minute spent on the (albeit comfortable) bus.

Gray Line did a fantastic job at putting this tour together. My wife and I enjoyed every minute of it and we saw so much in the 14 hours it took. Yes, the tour took 14 hours, but with all the frequent stops the coach made for sights and breaks, it wasn't bad on the body at all. The Glacial Lagoon was wonderful! Seeing the iceberg floating just a few yards away was memorial. We also spotted several seals in the lagoon as well. We saw several waterfalls, geysers and got some awesome views of the surrounding mountains. We were lucky to drive through a "sand" storm (something that was a bit scary and exciting at the same time). Our tour guide did a fantastic job and informing us of all sights, along with history to back it up. He was also comical and told great stories about elves and trolls. He was kind enough to stop the coach to point out the northern lights in the sky (even though it was just faint). I would recommend this to anyone who wants to see the "real "Iceland". Great Job Gray Line!
