AH19  Reykjanes Peninsula 15 May 2012 -
15 Sep 2012

Highlights:
  • Mid Atlantic Ridge
  • Coast line of Reykjanes Peninsula
  • Lava Fields
  • Lighthouse (pass by)
  • Bridge over the Continental Ridge
  • The Blue Lagoon

Tour Description:

ATTENTION: Please note that there will be a change in departure time in 2012. This tour will depart Reykjavík at 08:00 and not at 09:00 as previously advertised.

After leaving the capital we head to the Reykjanes peninsula where you can see the mid Atlantic ridge rises from the ocean. This is where the tectonic plates of Europe and America are slowly drifting apart by about 1 cm a year.

More than half of the peninsula is covered with lava fields, some of which are only a few hundred years old.  We head for the old lighthouse on the westernmost tip of the peninsula. This is a magnificent area with rich bird life in the summer. From there we continue through the lava fields to the nearby fishing village of Grindavík.

Our next stop is at The Blue Lagoon where you have three different options; a visit to The Blue Lagoon, transfer to Keflavík Airport or return back to Reykjavík according to the transfer schedule below.

Transfers from the Lagoon to Reykjavik are available at 12:00, 15:00, 17:15, 19:00 and 21:00

Transfers from the Blue Lagoon to the Airport are available at 12:00, 14:00 and 15:00.

Please note:  Entrance fee to the bathing area is not included in the tour price. The Reykjanes Peninsula portion of the tour is 2,5-3 hours in duration, with flexible departures from the Blue Lagoon available.

Good guide with many stories about the area. But please start the tour a half-hour earlier (8:30) and alow that time for walking in Grindavik. Also, a drive through Keflavik would be nice to see the city.

Gray Line is easy to book and to travel with and the online service is outstanding as are the local guides. The small size of this tour around the Reykjanes Peninsula was great - our tour guide was very knowledgable, friendly and attentive to the varied interests of the members of the tour group. To stand in no man's land between the American and European tectonic plates was quite something and the striking coastline and thermal mud pools a bonus. To finish the day off soaking in the amazing Blue Lagoon with a glass of champagne was such a pleasure. I recommend this tour option. Lynne

Grindavik village was not very interesting but the rest of the tour was good. I just would have appreciated a bit more pauses to take pictures.

tour was arranged by a small minibus, only driver. he was really kind and helpful and did his best to guide us through the peninsula and explain about sights but he is English level was not sufficient. otherwise flexibility reg return from the blue lagoon is appreciated.
