AH172  Black and Blue All year round

Highlights:
  • Gjábakkahellir cave
  • Snorkeling in the Silfra

Tour Description:

We start with the black as we explore the hidden world of the lava field under the Þingvellir national park. Walking in a cave and discovering the marvels that volcanic activity has created in the past is a trip that everyone can undertake. The Gjábakkahellir cave is a perfect example of an Icelandic lava tube and is situated in one of the most active volcano areas in the world. After the cave we dine on a packed lunch before moving on into the blue...

Snorkeling in Silfra is our second adventure. The Silfra fissure is one of Iceland’s best-kept secrets, an otherworldly scene that is world famous for its heavenly shades of blue. The crystal clear water in the deep fissure gives you a feeling of being weightless as you float down with the lazy current. The snorkeling is a relaxing but exotic trip in an environment most will only encounter in their dreams.

The Black & Blue is an amazing trip, a true journey to the borders of reality and dreams.

Trip difficulty 2 out of 5 possible.

We recommend hiking boots, warm and windproof clothing, gloves and warm undergarments (fleece / wool / thermal) and warm socks. Hiking boots and windproof jackets and pants can be rented from the tour operator.

This tour is actually run by Arctic Adventures not Gray Line but it was a good tour (I have had a look since returning and the price isn’t that much different on Arctic Adventures website). One of the main reasons I brought our tours through Gray Line is because they would give you a refund with 24 hours notice, which others did not. Going on a self organised holiday from Britain can be ruined if a few centimetres of snow fall. The tour guides were really confident ad helped everyone get into their equipment. Everything was fully explained to us and they put me at ease. The cave was in fact a lava tube and it was fascinating looking at a moment in history. There were lava stalagmites (although not true versions as they are done growing). At one point we turned off our lights and our guide told us folk stories. The snorkelling was an experience but not one I would be in a hurry to repeat. Your body is warm the body shaped sleeping bag under the dry suit made sure to that but your hands and face get cold. For me my hands started to hurt, even with the wet suit material on them and holding them on my back. It was beautifully clear but there wasn’t much life to look at. I am glad I did it and they make sure you are safe but the suit is very tight around your neck and I felt like I was being mildly strangled. It was a good day and the adventure parts are fun. The tour guides should be commended for keeping the rest of the trip interesting as well by telling you stories about Iceland and scientific facts about the land. --- Iceland Excursions: --- Thank you for your comments and review. This tour is operated in cooperation with Arctic Adventures and the fares are exactly the same. We try our best to have a reasonable cancellation policy and reschedule when needed, this works well with our passengers. Glad you endjoyed the tour and yes, the fissure waters of Silfra are very cold since it is a runoff from a glacier.

Great guide and glad it was a small group and not a coach tour. Could have done with knee pads for caving!

Booked trip through Iceland Excursions it was operated by Artic Adventures. The tour guide was great. We enjoyed all his stories and information about the areas around us. He really loves his country. Snorkeling was an experience that topped off our trip. Remember to wear a base layer that day and wool socks. Your clothes won't get wet. The wet suit is very warm. The only things that got wet were my cheeks and hands. My hair eventually got wet when I took off my cap and jumped into the water after snorkeling. Very fun. Caving was something I've never done before and will do it again. Driving through the mist and the volcano fields is a beautiful site and caving had a lot of great things to look at. Remember waterproof gear for this part of the tour and gloves. You'll be crawling.

As this was one of the tours i hadn't taken on previous visits,i wasn't sure what to expect but i needn't have worried. The tour was great, the guides were very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. It was the first time i had actually been in a lava tube and i enjoyed it.I enjoyed the snorkelling even more,as someone who frequently snorkels/freedives in the Red Sea,i was keen to experience snorkelling in the Silfra, and it was a surreal experience.Just getting into the gear was an experience in itself! Got some amazing photos both above and underground, and underwater.I can definitely recommend this tour.
