AH130  Golden Circle & Glacier Lake 15 Jun 2013 -
15 Sep 2013
08

Highlights:
  • Þingvellir National Park
  • Gullfoss waterfall
  • Glacial lake at Langjökull
  • Geysir hot spring area

Tour Description:

Join us on an exciting journey which will take you to the source of the glacial river Hvítá.

The tour starts by visiting Þingvellir National Park where the Icelandic parliament Alþingi was established in the year 930 AD. You will have the opportunity to walk into the dramatic structure of Almannagjá‘s fault, with its towering walls.

We proceed through fertile agricultural areas and visit the canyon of Hvítá river and its unique two tiered waterfall Gullfoss, with each tier dropping at right angles to each other.

From Gullfoss we continue along mountain road Kjölur on our way to the Glacier Lake. There we will take a boat tour and navigate around the lake in the proximity of Iceland‘s second largest glacier, Langjökull. During the tour you will be taken on dry land and given the chance to take a short stroll beside the edge of the glacier. The duration of the boat tour is about 1 hour.

After an enjoyable tour on the Glacier Lake we visit the geothermal area of Geysir and the spouting hot spring Strokkur, which ejects water columns up in the air every few minutes.

On our way back to Reykjavík we will pass by the greenhouse village of Hveragerði.

Take this tour instead of the normal Golden Circle. For starters you will be carried around in a big truck with capacity of around 15 people instead of in a big bus with other 50 tourists. And later you will be driven to the glaciers which are a natural wonder of Iceland. In our tour, we even had the oportunity to walk in the glacier for 10 minutes. Dont miss the opportunity to eat a bit of ice! :)

Super easy to find the bus, our driver was incredibly helpful and full of awesome information about Iceland which was actually really interesting and added to the value of our trip, and was great about giving us plenty of time to stop at view points and places of interest. While the Golden Circle highlights were incredible and better than expected, the highlight was truly the glacier lake stop at Langjökull- a delicious lunch on the way from a small local spot, and then a simply once in a life time experience of being taken out to walk on a glacier! Our hosts at Langjökull were so rad- very friendly, acomodating, and made it a really authentic experience. We will never forget it. Highly recommend the glacier lake stop! Absolutely awesome trip all around. Thank you Grayline!

The sights we saw on this tour were among the highlights of our visit to Iceland, but I wish we had had more time to see them. We had only 25 minutes in Thingvellir, just enough time to get off the bus, snap a few photos, and get back on. Our stops at Geysir and Gullfoss were a little longer, but we still found ourselves running back to the bus without being able to really relax and enjoy what we were seeing. Because we added the Glacier Lake to the Golden Circle, we were on a small van rather than a large tour bus. This meant that the windows were small to begin with and because of the rain that day they fogged up quite a bit, so we couldn't really enjoy the views of the countryside. The part of the drive through Hveragerði seemed like a bit of a waste. I would have preferred going back the way we came if it mean that we could have had more time at the stops. On the more positive side, our guide did a good job, and we are very glad we had a chance to walk a little bit on the glacier.

This is a great tour. It is a wonderful combination of the Golden Circle and the natural beauty of a glacier and glacier lake. It was amazing racing across the glacier lake on the boat and walking up to and onto the glacier. Our group was really small (4 people) and Geir (our guide) was lovely. Because our group was so small it felt like a friend was showing us around. I learned a lot about Iceland and its people on this tour from Geir.

This trip was absolutely amazing! The view of the glacier from the boat was exceptional. Then we walked to the glacier and touched the ice. The driver and the boat crew are all very professional and nice people. This tour is off the beaten track and you can see the beauty of the nature without hundreds of other tourists.
