AH15  Iceland From Below All year round

Highlights:
  • Lava tubes
  • Craters
  • Stalactites

Tour Description:

Available throughout the year, this tour takes you to unique sights of Iceland’s most spectacular lava tube caves and craters.

We will enter through narrow cave entrances and find they reveal extraordinary scenery of colors and lava formations. These beautiful, natural phenomena were created when the surface lava hardened and the fluid lava continued to flow in tubes underneath.

You will also see natural stalactites and many different rock formations making this nearly an indescribable experience. The caves become wide and high and in many places the floor is quite even. However, the trip can become rather difficult so we recommend you bring good walking shoes or hiking boots which are suitable for uneven lava surfaces.

Respect for nature and safety are our main concerns. There are no handrails, lights or any pre-installed tools in or around the caves.
We rely completely on the equipment we carry and that people respect our guidelines. This tour is suitable for all who can walk on uneven surfaces and at times, crawling on all fours to get through narrow places.

Please noteThis tour is not recommended for children under the age of 10.

Different and enjoyable but involves a fair amount of crawling and stooping plus there wasnt that much to see once inside the cave. --- Iceland Excursions: --- As indicated in the description of the tour, the lava tubes are preserved in their absolute natural way, created when the surface lava hardened and the fluid lava continued to flow in tubes unerneath. Natural Stalactites are also seen as well as many different rock formation. Not sure what was expected to be seen inside but for many this is what lava tubes are all about.

We both did this excursion last year, saturday 26th november 2011. We found all the information in the brochure VERY helpful and it made a point of warnings regarding safety wear, the dark, restricted movement in some parts and the list goes on ! We cannot fault this trip whatsoever !!!! The guide was fantastic, wish we could remember his name, slight build, distinguished looking, very funny, helpful, kind and reassuring !!! It was a 5******* excursion. Infact EVERY trip we took with grayline was great, well organised, very prompt on hotel pick ups and all very nice people. Going again this November and will DEFINATELY be using them again !

the gear was too big, so the coveralls dragged and the hard hat kept falling off! Would have been nice to get instructions at the beginning of the tour as to what we were going to do (how far we would travel inside the cave etc.) Good physical activity.

Thank your for your review. We try to get the information of the sizes of coveralls that would fit all participants, too bad we did not bring along a suitable size for you. The tour is of 3 hour duration and we try our best to have all information of the progress of the tour listed in our published material online and in our brochure. The lava tubes can be quite long and a strenous trek inside and is recomended for those able to walk on uneven surfaces and at times, crawling on on all fours to get through narrow areas. Glad you enjoyed the tour.

We liked the tour very much and would have rated it 5 stars if not (2 negative points, and 2 positive points): (1:negative) the group was too big. There were more than 20 people in our group. Our guide was also surprised to find so many subscriptions for this tour. (2:negative) some participants in the group were hardly fit to climb the rocks and dive under the stalactites and were complaining all the time about the survival aspect of the tour. The guide or the office should not have accepted these old ladies or at least have informed them better about these aspects of the tour. On the other hand; for us it could have been a little more challenging. (1:positive) The guide was really nice and gave us lots of background information, during the ride in the truck to the cave and in the cave as well. The spooky story in the cave near the bones was a real highlight in the tour. (2:positive) The organization was very well and friendly; the guide and his assistance drove through Reykjavik to drop people off at their own hotels - that is a nice service.

Thank you for your comments and feedback. As to the accepting of passengers not fit for the tour, we have made very clear description in all our publications both online and printed brochure about the caves. The following is one paragraph: "
Respect for nature and safety are our main concerns. There are no handrails, lights or any pre-installed tools in or around the caves.
We rely completely on the equipment we carry and that people respect our guidelines. This tour is suitable for all who can walk on uneven surfaces and at times, crawling on all fours to get through narrow places"  When passengers book this tour we asume that they are aware of this statement.
