AH27  The Viking Horse & Golden Circle Afternoon All year round

Highlights:
  • Viking horse riding tour
  • Þingvellir National Park
  • Gullfoss waterfall
  • Geysir hot spring area

Tour Description:

This combination of a Viking Horse Riding Tour and AH11 Golden Circle Afternoon is for those who don't have much time, but want to make the most of their day.

The Icelandic horse is a breed that has remained virtually unchanged since the Vikings brought it to Iceland in the 9th century. Enjoy a riding tour in the idyllic landscape of Laxnes, located just out of Reykjavik city.  The riding tour is suitable for all ages and experience levels, from beginner to expert.

After the riding experience and a short break we join our Golden Circle Afternoon tour, which leaves Reykjavík at 13:00, and head to the National Park Þingvellir, with its remarkable geological features. The Icelandic Parliament - Alþingi - was founded on the site in 930 AD., making it the oldest still-functioning parliament in the world.

We visit the impressive glacial waterfall Gullfoss and the geothermal area around Geysir and Strokkur with its spouting geysers. The tour takes us through fertile agricultural areas before heading back to Reykjavík over the mountain heath Hellisheiði.

Please note:  This tour is not recommended for children under the age of 6.

A great tour. The staff at the farmhouse were friendly and helpful. They provided shoes, riding clothes and equestrian helmets for everyone who needed them. The tour is great for beginners to experts and the staff made sure they paired everyone with a horse that was right for them (mine was called Long Nose). It was a great ride and there was always a staff member riding nearby to make sure our group was fine. The Golden Circle tour was a great way to end the day after riding. The tour guide knew her stuff and was friendly. We were always on time and had more than enough time to take in all the sights. Theres a reason the Golden Circle is such a popular tour: its absolutely fantastic to go to Thingvellir and to see Gullfoss and the geysirs. I highly recommend this tour for anyone whos eager to go to Iceland and Id definitely recommend going with Iceland Excursions. (At one point, one of my camera batteries fell out of my bag at the farmhouse. I went to Iceland Excursions two days later to ask if theyd seen it. They immediately got in contact with the farmhouse. The staff at the farmhouse soon found it and tour office arranged for the battery to be brought back to the office for me to pick up that same day and at no extra cost to me. Clearly, Im now an even bigger fan of Iceland Excursions).

Excellent tour and also very good for younger children. The people at the horse farm are very friendly and helpful. Don`t worry about clothing - they offer all what is needed for staying warm and dry and of course for safety. Beginner or well experienced rider doesn`t matter - there are groups for each level. There was enough time for having very good homemade lunch at the farm, a nice chat with the owners before heading on with the afternoon tour. We did that tour for the 2nd time but it wasn`t boring at all. The spots are great, plenty of time to see the places and we even got new informations about Iceland . A perfect day. Thanks to the staff and the farm people!

We started our day with the horse riding which was amazing! It was really good fun and the people on the farm were lovely and took great care of us! Can absolutely recommend the horse riding there! Afterwards we continued to the Golden Circle. We were picked up after the riding with a huge bus, which was OK. Our tour guide, a german lady, was OK-ish although I felt she talked way to much on the whole trip. It was like everyone was silent and half of us in the bus were sleeping and suddenly she started to talk about something not worth knowing at all. Like how the surnames of Icelandic people develop and such stuff. Not very sensitive I think. Plus the loudspeaker in the bus was horribly loud and annoying. I highly recommend checking the sound system before the trip starts! However, the Geysir was great to see but afterwards we continued to Gulfoss and it already was dark. So we couldn´t see anything of the waterfall which was a shame. I felt that was very bad planning. Its better to do the horse riding seperately and start the Golden Circle quite early otherwise its a waste of time and money - which I felt it was - except of the horse riding.

Thank you for your comments and review. So glad you liked the horse riding, one of our most popular tours. The size of the buses used on each tour depends on the number of passengers booked on any given day. We have a number of tour guides of different nationalities who are all well qualified and licensed by the proper authorities all dedicated to offer their best knowledge of Iceland and the history and the people of the country. Each and every guide has their own way of sharing their stories and facts and are of course encouraged to do so. During their guiding they will have quite a variation of questions and most if not all visitors to Iceland are very curious to hear how Icelandic names came about.

We will check on the strength of the loudspeakers, usually passengers want this full strength.

Since your tour was on December 30th one of the shortest days of the year a great effort is made in order to see all the sites of the Golden Circle and end at the Gullfoss waterfall during the twilight that can be quite spectacular at this time of year. The conditions of the roads during the latest snowfall and frost also means a little slower process of the tour for safety reasons.

We are glad you enjoyed most of the tour though and appreciate your comments.

I had never ridden a horse before (we took the trip on my 32nd birthday) but I loved it. Stunning scenery, and stables were run by a lovely family. Soup and home made bread, then on to an amazing afternoon seeing the hot springs and the like. Perfect day :-)
