AH160  Glacier Overnight 1 Jun 2013 -
1 Sep 2013

For the first time you have the possibility to camp overnight on a glacier. You do not have to be an explorer or scientist to overnight on the glacier.

Itinerary

This guided tour takes you to the farming district of Borgarfjordur and to the highest flow hot spring in Europe, Deildartunguhver. We will visit the lava waterfalls Hraunfossar, drive through the woodlands of Husafell and up to the desert highlands by Langjokull glacier. At the roots of the glacier we will board our Ice ExplorerMan 8X8 that will take us to the top of Langjökull, Europe’s second largest glacier, ranging in height from 650 meters up to 1378 meters. We will explore the glacier and experience the unique travelling on the top of the snow and the thick solid icefield. We will learn about its movement and how the melting water forms rivers and lagoons and how the glacier is getting smaller because of global warming. We will explore the glacier from inside and can view the ash and snow layers going back many years in history.

The Ice Explorer will leave you by the glacier camp for overnight. Staying overnight on the glacier is a once in a lifetime experience. Watching the sunset and the sunrise as the midnight sun lights up the horizon. You will take part in preparing the food with the other participants – led by the glacier guide who will take care of your safety on the glacier. Dinner is served at the camps with Icelandic traditional food and drinks. The night is young and the night is yours in what feels like the middle of nowhere.
The morning after, once we have had breakfast, our route continues back to Reykjavik through the mountain tracks.
